Anguish With Posie

Anguish With Posie was performed in The Changing House studio in Glasgow's Tron theatre. Basically I was working on the premise that there was a very limited budget and everything had to be done as cheaply as possible. In the end the set cost less than £100 all in.

Designing for this show was pretty hectic as we didn't have a proper work space to make things before the get in and also while trying to design and build for this I was working full time as assistant designer on War and Peace for Scottish Opera and RSAMD.

The set is a dreary flat in Glasgow which is home to a miserable writer. Given the issues with budget the set was designed to fit within the space without having to construct fake walls or doors. I decided to use colour to represent the two characters.

Aengus was grey and lifeless while his estranged daughter Posie dressed in pink and was full of life. We used boxes to conceal a double doorway in the middle of the space and these boxes symbolised how Aengus had boxed up his emotions and his former life. We used a pink box as the only thing of colour in the flat as it was the box Aengus kept has keep-sakes of Posie in.
